Summary, 2014. 16mm color film, sound transferred to HD. 17:41

  • In Summary (2014), art-writer, curator, and critic, Jan Tumlir, analyzes The Milky Way (2014-15), a film completed by Richmond in 2015 that follows an unnamed humanoid giant, with a Buddha-like countenance, as he encounters an array of characters living on the margins of society. Tumlir discusses several thought provoking motifs and apocalyptic landscapes, while drawing a line linking the film’s giant with the history of picture and sound in cinema. Tumlir’s impressions mimic the circular tone of the film. Yet, there is a disconnect when he describes events, drawing attention to the notion of memory. Both a companion piece to The Milky Way and a stand-alone work, Summary is a detour from the conventional review or DVD commentary. It doesn’t explain, as much as it intrigues.
